Editorial Galaxia was founded on 25 July 1950 in Santiago de Compostela. Ramón Otero Pedrayo, patriarch of Galician letters, presided over the foundation assembly. Galaxia was created as a platform for cultural action in support of Galician language and culture in times of great difficulty: Franco's dictatorship. The Galicianist resistance designed a programme of cultural and political action which would bear fruit in years to come. Over fifty years later Galaxia's catalogue plays a major role in the current world of Galician publishing and creation.
The classics are in Galaxia: Alfonso R. Castelao, Eduardo Blanco Amor, Álvaro Cunqueiro, Ánxel Fole, Ramón Otero Pedrayo, Vicente Risco... Galaxia founders and managers make up a crucial heritage of contemporary letters: Carlos Casares, Domingo García Sabell, Ramón Piñeiro, Francisco Fernández del Riego... They exist side by side with the younger authors: Manuel Rivas, Anxos Sumai, Bieito Iglesias, Antón Riveiro Coello, Xesús Constela, Yolanda Castaño, Miguel Anxo Murado, Fina Casalderrey...
Galaxia's publication catalogue extends over a broad spectrum. Faithful to its fundamental principles, Galaxia pursues the continuing development of a reading society by introducing new themes, subjects and genres, new proposals and new lines of study and research. Galaxia's project is continually updated and includes classics collections, translations of major works of classic and contemporary world literature, poetry, essay, leisure and environmental guides, children's and young-adult literature, reportage etc. The scope of the catalogue extends from literary creation and philosophical thought to didactics and school materials: handbooks, dictionaries, textbooks etc.
Over two thousand titles bear witness to a catalogue in constant renewal. Since 1963 Editorial Galaxia publishes Grial: Revista Galega de Cultura, a Galician cultural periodical which reaches all major centres for Galician literature studies and the world's best universities.
